Friday Fun Links 2/1/13
It’s Super Bowl weekend and we’ve got the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens squaring off for NFL supremacy! There are several intriguing story lines associated with the big game including the fact the head coaches are brothers (Jim and John Harbaugh) and future Hall-of-Famer, Ray Lewis, will retire after the game. Here are some other interesting anecdotes to prepare you for Super Bowl Sunday!
Facebook used their vast data resources to create a cool statistical map. By examining where users live and which NFL team they’ve “liked,” Facebook was able to map out a fairly scientific study of NFL fan allegiances. For the most part, the data seems to fall exactly where you would think it does, although the Cowboys, Packers and Steelers have pockets of fans throughout the country. Perhaps even more interesting is the map of who people are cheering for on Sunday. Let’s just say the 49ers bandwagon is quite full.
What makes the Super Bowl especially fun for non-fans are the commercials. Companies are spending a ridiculous $3.7-3.8 million per 30-second spot! That’s quite an expensive gamble for an advertisement that might not necessarily drive the bottom line. Interestingly enough, the DailyBeast released a list of the 20 Most Effective Super Bowl Ads since 2005, taking into account stock price changes, viewer likability scores and advertising review grades. Coming in at #1 is one of my personal favorite ad campaigns from the last few years (how can you go wrong with Betty White?).
Prop bets are also an entertaining way to enhance your Super Bowl viewing. Grantland has a fun piece explaining exactly what prop bets are and shares some of the more bizarre scenarios available this weekend to bet on. Possibilities include: Who will score more points on Sunday, Kobe Bryant or the 49ers?; Will Beyonce’s hair be straight or curly/crimped at the beginning of the halftime show?; and How many times will the game be referred to as Harbaugh Bowl, Har Bowl, or Super Baugh during the game?
I’m predicting a Ravens win … 27 – 23. Who do you got?
